Women’s Health & Hygiene Educational Program

1 in 5 girls in Nepal will miss school because of their periods. Throughout the country there is still a stigma surrounding menstruation and education is lacking in schools. Women and girls have little understanding of this normal occurrence and are often faced with embarrassment and shame. The lack of education leads to health problems, environmental pollution and gender inequality.

We are working to lift this stigma and raise awareness around menstrual health. We have developed reusable, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, sanitary kits that not only provide comfort and confidence for women and girls during menstruation, they also have little to no impact on the environment.

It takes 800 years for regular plastic sanitary pads to decompose. The average woman will use 350 packs of plastic sanitary pads during her lifetime. By contrast, our sanitary pads are 100% biodegradable and reusable, and the average woman will only use 16 of LOCWOM’s pads in her lifetime.

We aim to visit schools in remote regions of Nepal and give talks about women’s health, the causes of menstruation and how girls should look after themselves during this time. We want to lift the stigma surrounding menstruation and we need your help.

One kit includes 2 cotton sanitary pads, 5 washable fillings, 1 bar of soap and 1 reusable bag (preventing the use of plastic)

These bags cost $7 in total and can be used for many years. One bag is also empowering women to change the way they think about menstruation and remove the stigma surrounding it.
